AdAlta has a number of compound libraries including shark antibody, i-body (human version of the shark antibody) and peptide libraries. The shark antibody and i-body offer the same specificity and affinity properties of traditional antibodies, however also offer additional advantages including extreme stability (pH and temperature) as well as small size (1/10th the size of a monoclonal antibody). Due to these advantages the AdAlta shark antibody or i-body can be integrated into small technologies such as novel point of care diagnostic platforms, inhaled therapeutic systems and therapeutic delivery technologies as examples. Due to their small size the shark antibody and i-body offer advantages as therapeutic imaging agents, in specific therapeutic areas, for example cancer (due to increased tissue penetration) and also offer advantages for various therapeutic delivery routes, with potential for pulmonary, ocular, dermal or oral delivery due to their small size and stability. AdAlta can screen its proprietary libraries to identify diagnostic or drug candidates to any target of a client’s choice.

The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) is a medical research institute specializing in basic, clinical and translational research in to eye diseases. We have developed a number of animal models for the investigation of ophthalmic conditions and are involved in research and development of new therapeutic strategies, including novel drug delivery methods, laser treatments, bionic vision, bioengineered tissue and new surgical methods.
Future therapies in each of theses areas will require nanotechnology solutions and small technology expertise as the eye is a small complex organ. For example, a bionic eye will require microelectronics placed on the retina. Another example is the unmet need for drug delivery systems to the posterior region of the eye. Such systems will require nanotechnology to control drug delivery from a small implant.
CERA can offer expertise in animal models to test the performance of these ocular products of the future that will be based on nanotechnology. Futhermore, our clinical expertise, clinical trial experience, and patient repositories allow us to translate animal model findings into human clinical trials.

Formero utilises a range of cutting edge Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies to produce high quality plastic and metal components directly from a 3D computer model. The AM technologies all utilise the process of building layer upon layer, joining those layers with a high intensity laser. The layer thickness can be varied from 20 to 100 microns. A range of plastic and metals powders are used to produce fully dense components that are ideal for prototyping or production purposes. As no tooling is needed to produce the components the lead times and overall costs are dramatically reduced with parts being produced in hours rather than weeks.

Over the last 20 years Hi-Tech Metrology has been involved in supplying high accuracy dimensional measuring equipment and expertise to many industries across Australia and New Zealand. Measuring accuracies of less than .010mm (.00039”) are possible using a variety of technologies including contact and non-contact systems enabling many clients to inspect manufactured or purchased products and assemblies. This can be done by either using manually controlled systems, or by using some of the many fully automated systems available. Nearly all systems these days operate using state of the art Windows driven PC’s and high level software capable of taking clients CAD model data and using this as the basis of a measuring routine. This type of technology requires support from an expert service team and the support engineers at Hi-tech are well rehearsed in carrying this out over our vast client base.

Phosphagenics is a Melbourne-based, globally driven biotechnology company focused on the discovery of new and cost effective ways to enhance the bioavailability, activity, safety and delivery of proven pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products. Phosphagenics’ proprietary technology is a multi-component, multi-function system that revolves around a mixture of different forms of phosphorylated vitamin E called tocopheryl phosphate mixture (TPM). TPM forms unique nanoparticles able to entrap pharmaceutical, nutraceutical or cosmeceutical moledcules, and increase their absorption for greater efficacy when applied topically to the skin (in gels, creams or patches) or taken orally. Phosphagenics is able to conduct a range of studies for third parties interested in how TPM can be used to increase the delivery of their active molecule of interest, either orally or topically. TPM is most applicable to molecules with poor skin penetration or have been shown to irritate the skin, have poor absorption when taken orally (ie. Fat soluble vitamins), or are expensive.

PM Design Groups (PMD) core competence is in the complete engineering design and delivery of innovative and often complex new technology, typically at a project scale of $0.5M-$5m installed cost. Most of our current customers are either established industrial manufacturing firms that invest in new processes or technologies due to product developments or in response to market pressure (increased energy costs, emission reduction etc), or “incubator” or start-up organisations established to commercialise innovative new technologies. As such we have an established capability in developing novel, unusual and “one-off” concepts into operational states. Our engineering process has developed to manage the risk associated with these sorts of development processes. In addition, we are majority owned by an organisation with global engineering project capability that supports our delivery capabilities (Kempe Engineering).

The Polymer CRC has a Japanese Steel Works (JSW) Tech-30 reactive extruder (30mm, twin screw), with dedicated operator, facilitates laboratory level processing of polymers to enable companies to undertake experimental development work to chemically modify and functionalise polymers. Reactive extrusion can be used to extend their range of physical and processing properties to achieve target properties, and the process can be scaled up and integrated into larger scale continuous extrusion manufacturing processes.
The JSW extruder and its ancillary equipment including gravimetric feeders, desiccant driers, Coriolis mass flow meter, and syringe pumps permit processing and reaction condition control over a very wide range of conditions. It represents an extremely valuable piece of equipment for companies wishing to develop small technologies like nanocomposites or for the production of specialty polymers.

Fortus FDM prototyping machines offer advanced capabilities to produce small fine feature detailed parts to the very large complex parts for production.
Fortus 3D Production systems go far beyond use as a traditional rapid prototyping machine. Fortus systems use a durable range of thermoplastic materials that are used in traditional manufacturing processes today. This allows Fortus technology to provide the following benefits for owners:
1. Concept models for form and fit (as per other 3D Printing technologies)
2. Full functional prototypes in the same material that the production parts will be moulded from.
3. Manufacturing tools such as assembly jigs/fixtures, sand casting patterns, drilling fixtures etc.
4. Lower volume production parts straight from the printer with no need for tooling. Fortus systems are providing businesses with new advanced manufacturing methods to reduce time and cost to the owner without having to send manufacturing offshore.

About the vouchers
The voucher system gives businesses access to approved service suppliers, such as the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, the Australian Synchrotron, MiniFab, institutions such as CSIRO and universities, and other private companies with small technologies expertise. Vouchers are issued in the name of the company (the voucher recipient), have no cash value, and are non-transferable.
Types of vouchers available:
The Small Technologies Feasibility (STFeas) voucher
The Small Technologies Feasibility (STFeas) voucher has a maximum value of $10,000 and can be used for small fee-based services such as demonstration of coatings, preliminary testing, and consulting services to evaluate feasibility of micro and nanofabrication processes. STFeas voucher applications can be submitted to the Small Technologies Cluster at any time and will be processed as they are received.

The Small Technologies Industry Uptake Program aims to:
- Increase absorption and adoption of small technology applications across Victoria
- Assist businesses to move more rapidly from concepts and ideas to commercial products and services using small technologies
- Enable businesses to access expert small technology capabilities (people and facilities) within publicly funded institutions and private sector service providers
- Build links between providers of knowledge in Victoria’s publicly funded research and development organisations and the private sector.
There are three different vouchers that target different stages that are required for industry to take up small technologies. The three voucher types are:
- The Small Technologies Feasibility Voucher (STFeas)
- The Small Technologies Technical Voucher (STTech)
- The Small Technologies Trial Voucher (STTrial)
The Small Technologies Feasibility Voucher (STFeas) will be issued to a maximum value of $10,000 and can be used for small fee-based services such as demonstration of coatings, preliminary testing, marketing studies, and consulting services to evaluate feasibility of micro and nano fabrication processes.
